Once a bill has completed all the parliamentary stages in the House of Commons and the House of Lords, it is ready to receive Royal Assent. This is when the Queen formally agrees to make the bill into an Act of Parliament and the bill becomes law.
Following agreement by both Houses on the text of the Bill it received Royal Assent on 12 May 2016, so the Immigration Bill is now the Immigration Act 2016.
The legislation within the bill will come into effect only after the government have detailed the Regulations. This will be in approximately six months when there will be a commencement order which is designed to bring the Act into force
