Lord Bates, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office has announced: “Practical arrangements to remove the restriction that prevents Azure card users from carrying over more than £5 credit on the card from one week to the next are imminent. Card users with children are already allowed to carry over unlimited credit. We expect to complete the work by the end of February. Card users will be notified of the change by letter and there will be appropriate changes to our website information about the card.”
Single people with no dependents were not allowed to carry over more than £5 at the end of each week, and any excess money was removed from the card. Because of the unjust carryover limit, from November 2009 to December 2010, the estimated amount of unspent credit recovered from the Azure card during the first year of its operation was £650,000. The total value for 2011 to 2013, was around £100,000 every year. That was money that was unclaimed and unused and finally is being put back into the pockets of asylum seekers.
